ABOUT US
Salt & Sill at Klädesholmen
RESTAURANT & ARCHIPELAGO
We who run Salt & Sill today are called Susanna and Patrick Hermansson and have run our hotel in Bohuslän by the sea since the beginning of the 2000s.
We started with a burning interest in food and people and a restaurant, which over the years would become internationally recognized. Nowadays, a floating hotel and conference facilities are also included.
It is no coincidence that our specialty at the pub was herring. Herring is, firstly, one of the dishes in Swedish history that has the longest history and, secondly, it can be varied and combined endlessly.
Thirdly, the old fishing village of Klädesholmen, where we are located, dates back as far as the 15th century and there were early herring salteries and canning factories here.
The purpose of the restaurant, in addition to becoming a well-known archipelago restaurant, was from the beginning that it would provide both summer guests and residents on Klädesholmen with high-quality food based on local ingredients with strong influences from the coast and sea. Today, the ambition is to develop the guests’ interest in food and inspire new tastes.
Floating hotel and meeting place
We started thinking about starting a hotel business back in 2004. The dream was to offer a total experience in food, drink and accommodation with Klädesholmen’s calming sea environment as a unique ingredient.
Klädesholmen’s limited area meant that there was only one way to implement it – it had to be a floating hotel.
Everyone agreed that Sweden’s first floating hotel would make Klädesholmen a popular destination all year round, and in 2008 hotel construction began. In order not to disturb residents and the environment on the island, it was carried out at a nearby quay in Wallhamn. The fact that the hotel was built on floating pontoons in a different location than where it was supposed to be was a challenge in itself.
The next challenge was the move, which took place at sea. In the middle of the high summer heat in July 2008, when the Marsstrandsfjord was completely windless, the six hotel modules were towed from Wallhamn to Ängholmen. Then to the final destination at Klädesholmen, where guests have since been able to live on the surface of the sea.
Interest from private individuals and conference guests has increased over the years, and therefore the next natural step was to build more and larger conference and party rooms. Nor was it simply on the limited surface, but was easily solved by extending existing buildings.
In the spring of 2013, the 300 square meter new premises were ready for guests who want to hold conferences or celebrate in direct proximity to the sea.
a salty story
Salt & Sill’s history stretches back roughly 19 years, under the current owner’s direction. Susanna and Patrick Hermansson became the third owners of the today well-known restaurant gem on the island of Klädesholmen. Their burning interest in food and people was the starting point for the internationally recognized restaurant, which now also includes a hotel and conference.
